Pearl Grading System

Pearl grading is very similar to the “4 C’s” of diamond grading in that the pearl grading system takes into consideration several key categories of qualitative comparison analysis. The pearl grading system consists of five main categories:

• 1. Luster
• 2. Shape
• 3. Color
• 4. Surface
• 5. Size

Although size will certainly play an important roll in evaluating the monetary value of a pearl, luster, shape, color, and surface quality are of primary importance. Each of these five steps are explained in detail in the following text.

Unfortunately, the pearl industry as a whole has not adopted a universally used standard grading system. Instead, the specific grading system used often depends upon the specific jeweler or pearl distributor.

Two major grading systems are in fairly widespread use: the ‘AAA-A Grading System’ and the ‘A-D Grading System’ – also called the Tahitian grading system. These are the most universally accepted standardized systems, and are used by nearly all reputable retail and wholesale pearl dealers.

The AAA-A Pearl Grading System

This system grades pearls on a scale from AAA to A, with AAA being the highest grade, this grading scale is common to freshwater and akoya pearls only, but is accepted by many South Sea and Tahitian pearl dealers. The AAA to A grades are as follows:

• AAA: Virtually flawless pearl. Surface luster is very high , and 95% of surface will be free from any defect.
• AA: The surface will have a very high luster, and at least 75% of the surface will be free from any type of defect.
• A: The lowest jewelry-grade pearl, with low surface luster and/or more than 25% of the surface showing defects.

The A-D Pearl Grading System

This grading system grades pearls on a scale from A to D, with A being the highest grade. This system is used in French Polynesia to grade Tahitian pearls, and South Sea pearls only. This is why it is referred to as the “Tahitian system.” While this system is standard in producing countries, other markets will use the AAA-A System.

• A: Highest-quality pearl, very high luster and only minor imperfections over less than 10% of its surface.
• B: High or medium luster. Surface may have some visible imperfections over no more than 30% of its surface area.
• C: Medium luster with surface defects over not more than 60% of the surface area.
• D: May have many slight defects over 60% of surface or deep defects over no more than 60% of surface.

Pearls of the ‘D’ variety may have a combination of minor and deep defects over no more than 60% of its surface. In this grade of pearl, the luster is irrelevant. Even the most lustrous pearls will be graded ‘D’ if their surface ares is blemished to this extent.

Pearls below ‘D’ grade are considered not acceptable for use in jewelry.

Both of these grading systems focus primarily on the luster and surface quality of the pearl to determine its grade. There are however, other factors that contribute to the quality and value of any pearl.

Abalone shells have rounded or oval with a big dome towards one end. The Abalone shell has a row of respiratory pores. The Abalone muscular foot has strong suction power permitting the abalone to clamp tightly to rocky surfaces. An epipodium, a sensory structure and extension of the Abalone foot that bears tentacles, circles the Abalone foot and projects beyond the Abalone shell edge in the living abalone. Abalone have nine species and occur in North America: black abalone, flat abalone, green abalone, pink abalone, pinto abalone, red abalone, threaded abalone, Western Atlantic abalone, and white abalone.

Abalone reach sexual maturity at a small and fertility is high and increases exponentially with size. Sexes are separate and fertilization is external. The Abalone eggs and sperm broadcast into the water through the Abalone pores with the respiratory current. A 1.5 inch abalone may spawn 10,000 eggs or more at a time, while an 8 inch abalone may spawn 11 million or more eggs. The Abalone spawning season varies among species with black, green and pink abalone spawning between spring and fall, and pinto abalone spawning during the summer. Red abalone in some locations spawn throughout the year. The Abalone fertilized eggs hatch into floating larvae that feed on plankton until their shells begin to form. Once the Abalone shell forms, the juvenile abalone sinks to the bottom where it clings to rocks and crevices with its single powerful foot. Settling rates appear to be variable. After settling, abalones change their diet and feed on macroalgae.

Except  black abalone, hybridization for abalone species is not uncommon in areas where several species occur together. There are 12 recognized hybrids in southern California and northern Baja California

Growth limited information about the abalone shell is less. Commercial sizes of 6.25 inches for pinks, seven inches for greens and 7.75 inches for reds are reached after a minimum of 10 to 15 years in southern California. Pinto abalone reach about 2.5 inches in a minimum of 6 years.

Yong abalones feed on rock-encrusting coralline algae and on diatom and bacterial films. Adult abalones feed primarily on loose pieces of marine algae drifting with the surge or current. Large brown algae such as giant kelp, bull kelp, feather boa kelp and elk kelp are preferred, although other species of algae may be eaten in various times.

Eggs of abalone and larvae are consumed by filter-feeding fish and shellfish. Predators of juvenile abalones include crabs, lobsters, gastropods, octopuses, starfish, and fishes. The bat ray in southern California and the sea otter in central California prey selectively on larger abalones.
