This year’s 52nd Grammy Awards, Rihanna walked the red carpet looking runway-ready: “Her dress was a couture gown by Elie Saab, and I was inspired by the makeup look at that show,” says makeup artist Mylah Morales. “On the runway there was a block of matte white eye shadow on the eyes but in order to make it less theatrical and more suitable for the red carpet I went with a shimmer texture.” Using Dior 1-Colour Ultra-Smoothing High Impact Eyeshadow in Crystal White, Morales says she applied the product with a wet brush to ensure more intense and long-lasting coverage.

To further enhance Rihanna’s eyes, Morales glued on spidery false lashes and lavished them with CoverGirl Lash Blast Length Mascara (“I used about three coats because I wanted the lashes to look spiky”). For a glowing finish, the makeup master brushed Dior Bronze Original Tan in Amber Tan on the jaw line and cheeks over facial moisturizer and foundation, followed by Nars’ new Orgasm Illuminator on the cheekbones, chin, and upper lip.

If you go from: blond to brunette

SHADE SHIFT: “It’s easy to look washed out with dark hair because there’s more contrast with your skin, making your face look paler,” explains celebrity makeup artist Troy Surratt. Also, since brunet hair absorbs light, you may look less naturally radiant.

MAKEUP FIX: Go for light-reflecting peaches and corals to warm up your skin and turn on the glow. Blush is a must.

If you go from: brunette to blond

SHADE SHIFT: Blonds can’t handle heavy makeup looks the way brunets can. “Anything bold or intense seems harsher on a blond,” explains Chanel makeup artist Rachel Goodwin, who works with Hilary Duff.

MAKEUP FIX: Go for soft, muted colors such as pale pinks, mauvey browns, and nudes, and avoid playing up more than one feature at a time. If you’re craving more drama, use a sparkly gray liner on your upper lid.

If you go from: brunette to reddish brown

SHADE SHIFT: Even if you keep your strand switch within a similar color family, you have to adjust your makeup — the undertones in your hair and cosmetic colors need to match.

MAKEUP FIX: “Our eye is trained to interpret color harmony as beauty,” says Surratt. So if you add, say, auburn highlights, you should ditch cool shades like bright blue and opt for warmer makeup hues such as tawny, champagne, and even a swipe of soft gray.
